New LATAR Expressway E25

It was on my way home from Bukit Beruntung. Instead of taking conjested E1, I preferred to cruise leisurely while listening to Andrea Bocelli on the newly opened LATAR Expressway, E25.

LATAR Expressway is part of the Kuala Lumpur Outer Ring Road. The 33 km expressway is connecting Ijok near Kuala Selangor to Templer's Park near Rawang.

Toyota Altis 1.8G - Nafsu kuat, tenaga kureng!

Been following an old Altis tailgating a yellow Polo TSi a km or two before the later gave way. I'm sure the Polo driver was just driving 'leisurely' while the former was seriously 'cucuking' the baby VW.

What a jocker! Some Toyota drivers in Malaya and from the Southern Republic are like 'et what!... :)

Then it was my turn to cucuk the Altis. At first the driver changed lane and allowed the lion to overtake but then looked like he wanted to test the waters again. The driver responded but not for long before the Altis was force to slowdown by its poor handling at a hi-speed curve... and a slower car in front.

Just a very very short fun... :(

Karak Highway Cruise

25km 'uphill cruise' along Karak Highway from Bentung Toll Plaza to Genting Sempah Tunnel in less than 10minutes - 'Normal' speed at the beginning. Then slowed down a bit when the detector sensed there was a speed trap around frame 5:00.

Only after frame 7:42 the accelerator pedal could be floored for the last ascend towards Genting Sempah before being forced to slow down and loosing momentum by a slower MPV.. Too lazy to down shift as the tunnel was just a few hundred meters away. There was also another speed trap in front of the tunnel.

Road K10 from Sintok to Padang Sanai in Kedah is being abused by some lorry operators [State gomen tutop mate saje ke].

By all means avoid from travelling on this road unless you want to test your car suspensions, ABS, EBD and stability control system such as ESP... like I did on the Peugeot 308 before the warranty expires within the next couple of months.

Another 1500km Trip

How to Retrieve Trip Logs from Garmin nuvi 2575R

note: these procedures are not written in the user manual.

Connect the GPS set to a pc/laptop using provided USB cable
Turn on the GPS then select "Mass storage mode"

Open mapping application such as Mapsource from the pc/laptop then click "Receive from Device" icon. When Dialogue box appears select the right device from the pull-down list.
Select "Tracks" under "what to receive" and then click "Receive". When "Transfer complete" dialogue box appears click OK. Done.
List of track logs can be found under "Tracks" tab. Double click on any "Active log" from the list to view "Track Properties" where you can retrieve trip data such as date, time, speed, altitude, latitude, longitude, ...etc.
If you click "show profile" you will see the vertical profile for the entire track.

This driver cuts off right in front despite of seeing the left-turn signal already been given. Not only that, this particular stupid [lady] parks the car at the very road junction some more. I wished I were driving a bull dozer...!!!

Then there was another stupid [lady] driver. First, she cuts me off and gives signal as if she was going to take either 3rd or 4th exit and allows me to overtake from the LHS. Suddenly SHE changed her mind to take the 2nd exit.

Next time use a GPS la!!

Sometimes a sport car driver can also be polite and considerate to others. I came across this particular PORSCHE driver who slowed down and gave way to a small-engined car in a hurry in which I was driving ... Many thanks beb!.

This video has two parts in sequence - forward and backward recording. Unfortunately the the vdo was recorded in different aspect ratios - 16:9 and 4:3 respectively. Next time I have to make sure both cams are set at the same aspect ratio for the format consistency...

Doesn't sound and look like a 308T acceleration isn't it? Well, to tell the truth it was recorded in a stock B 206 1.4 8V with a damaged rear shock absorber. Remember the 'knock' sound when it hit a speed bump?

1500-km Trip Highlights

Just returned home from 1500+km round trip to East Coast and Southern States of Malayan Peninsular.

DAY 1: November 6th, 2011 BBBangi-KLipis-GMusang-Machang (453km)

0029hrs

Pushed off from home in BBBangi, near Kajang. At the beginning the car was OK. However, after entering PLUS and during hard acceleration there was an indication of "something abnormal" with the turbo pressure.

Due to uncertainty about the engine condition, I decided to reroute the trip. Instead of driving north to Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands [E1 & Route #59] I detoured towards Karak Highway [E8] and continued driving in auto-cruise mode at speed limits for 42km. Arrived at Gombak Toll Plaza about 30 minutes later.

After the toll plaza I started to build up speed little-by-little while observing if there is some irregularities in turbo pressure. After everything was OK, I started to drive as usual like a typical nite-rider does... not too fast but faster than anybody else.

The last ascend before Genting Sempah Tunnel. The car was getting better. The torque was strong as before... handling was superb.

Entered Genting Sempah Tunnel.

It took 35 minutes to drive from BBBangi Exit to Genting Sempah Tunnel. Then continued driving leisurely at moderate speeds all the way to Machang, Kelantan.

Arrived at Machang Interchange safely!

Despite of turbo pressure loss at the beginning, and at a few more occasions along Day-1 Trip it took less than 5 hrs to drive from BBBangi to Machang. Otherwise it would have taken just slightly a few minutes over 4 hours. Never break 4-hr barrier to drive from BBBangi to Machang yet. From Gombak toll plaza, "yes" of course.

Be a nite-rider to arrive at destinations earlier, safely!

DAY 2: November 7th, 2011
Machang-Penarik-KTerengganu-Kuantan(385km)

I had to cancel driving around Kelantan due to the infamous Raya-Time traffic jams - despite of being the state with the largest number of car in-flux during festive and holidays, Kelantan is the only state in Malaysia that does not have inter-city double-carriage way yet. I was also worried the turbo pressure would give problems there. There is no Authorised Peugeot SC in Kelantan.

1351hrs

Left Machang on Route #4 towards PPutih and drove south along Route #3. The traffic was getting congested.

Left Route #3 and detour towards Pantai Penarik on routes T140 and T1.

Suddenly total loss in turbo pressure. Had to drive slow again before stopped at Pantai Penarik [N5 30.960 E102 58.939] for 15minutes to take a few photo shots...

Continued driving south along beautiful coastal road T1 before going south-west on T9. It was drizzling.

1753hrs

Entered the newly opened ECE2 at Ajil interchange. Without turbo pressure the car took very long time to speed up to 176kph [180kph on speedometer], otherwise I would have braved enough to add at least another 30kph more!

...faster than other cars though. Probably other drivers were enjoying the scenery.

2012hrs
Arrived at Kuantan near RMAF base. Dinner was ready. Spent overnite there.

DAY 3 - November 8th., 2011
Kuantan-Pekan-Endau-Mersing-KTinggi-JB (374km)

0647hrs

Turbo pressure failure persists. Left Kuantan and drove the car in AutoCruise mode at speed limits on the new Route #3 [Jalan Sultan Abu Bakar], double carriage expressway connecting Kuantan and Pekan.

0743hrs
Stopped at vintage town, between Pekan and Nenasi for about 40 minutes to snap a few frames of photo...

...then continued driving south along Route #3.

0913hrs
Stopped over by the seaside at Kuala Rompin for 20 minutes for another photo session ...

...then continued driving towards Endau. Suddenly 'Depollution Fault' displayed. Continued driving at very slow pace in auto-cruise.

1015hrs

Stopped for 30 minutes at Pantai Pasir Laun [Pirate Sand Beach?] about 18km to the SE of Endau town.

Contacted a SC in KL for advice what to do and to ask whether it is OK to continue driving without turbo pressure and with 'depollution fault' warning on. I was suggested to drive at slow pace to a SC in JB [160km/100miles away] for a diagnosis to find out what went wrong. I had to cancel the trip/stay overnite at Desaru.

Continued driving south by taking a new untracked bypass road.

I've submitted the tracklogs to Malfreemap where most Garmin and Papago users in Malaysia & Singapore get the latest routable maps for their GPS's. I'm one of the "valued contributors" to the Malsingmaps and Malfreemaps mapping communities since 2007. Probably I have submitted thousands of km of new road track-logs to date. Hopefully this is my 'amal jariah' to everyone who uses GPS navigation to drive on Malaysia Roads.

While driving between Mersing and JB there were a few occasions when turbo pressure returns but not for long enough to enjoy it...

1314hrs
Arrived at a Peugeot SC in JB. It was lunch hour and I was told to return and drive in straight away into "ICU" any time after 1400hrs. No documentation required for the emergency case. Excellent. So I went to lunch first with my son.

1414hrs
Drove the car into "ICU" for a complete diagnosys. Found out there is a "communication problem" between AL4 gearbox and the engine control unit [ECU]. The ECU did not get info when there is upshift from 1st gear. Such input is required to request the ECU to boost up turbo pressure and to inject more fuel wrt to the load and throttle position, hence incorrect air-fuel mixture. The problem was resolved. I was too happy and didn't bother to ask how did they rectify it.'Loss in Turbo Pressure' problem resolved. Back to normal except high end of the power band was not at its best. Century accel. also defecit by 200ms. Nevertheless not too bad.

1521hrs

Drove the car to a sister house in Taman Impian Emas, about 15km away to spend a nite before continuing trip to the southernmost point of Asia Mainland.

DAY 4 - November 9th., 2011 JB-Piai Cape-Pontian-BPahat-Muar-Melaka-BBBangi [371km]
0746hrs

Left JB. Driven by 'co-pilot' to Piai Cape. Stopped over for a photo tour in the mangrove reserve for 2 hrs... Click HERE for special edition of "the Mangroves"

... and then continued driving north along coastal road all the way to Batu Pahat before we stopped for Lunch. Then I took back the steering wheel and drove up north.

Play Play with a Modded Vios

This particular Modded Toyota Vios had been following and cucuk me since Tanjung Agas near SMS Muar. At a traffic light I gave way and let it pass and to see how fast it can pull away. I just followed 'slowly' from a distance until the car disappeared below the horizon before I started to chase back and expecting for a drag at the next traffic light.

Just 'suka-suka' to avoid 'mengantuk'. Was not too serious with a less powerful car like Toyota Vios.

BTW, watch what happened...

By the time arrived in Melaka I was too tired and decided to drive leisurely on PLUS in AutoCruise mode at speed limits all the way home ...

1605hrs Arrived home safely but the car looks dirty as if it is not cleaned for more than one month.

Fuel Consumption for the entire 1584km trip:
RM262 [136.5 liters of RON95]

The overall average fuel consumption normally was around 7.5liter/100km for similar trip i.e 1 liter less for every 100km. Still not too bad for a sick lion being 'forced' to run more than 600km w/o enough air to breath in though.

Testing Waters

Tomorrow nite, I'll be pushing off for one-week trip to Central, Eastern and Southern regions in Malayan Peninsular to cover approximately 1500km journey. On day-5 shall be at the most southern tip of Mainland Asia. (Northern region already covered recently)

This time around I'm expecting to drive in heavy rain (with my second son as co-pilot and navigator). It is Monsoon Season and will be suitable to test the waters...

Taking Risks

Just like in stock market, whatever you do or don't on the road there are always risks. No matter which risk to take, it must be a calculated one.

e.g: In an unpredictable situation where you are trailing a cluster of vehicle going up a winding slope there is a tendency somebody in front applies an emergency brake or there is an incoming vehicle if you decide to overtake. Which risk to take?

In this situation I opted for the one with lesser risk! In my calculation my.Peugeot.308 has ample torque for a quick dash and there is also enough space in case of an emergency situation. QED.

Range Rover "Kahn"

It was on my way back to Klang Valley from Penang and I realised a white 'monster' fiercely tailing behind me since Juru Toll Plaza. At first I thought it was a normal 4WD so I increased my car speed to approx. 50% above PLUS speed limit to get away from it.

Round 1

The ' monster' flexed its muscles and overtook me from LHS like the breeze... at that time I didn't know exactly what car was that. I was caught by surprise. Later on I was told there was a 4-letter wording behind it, read as "KAHN"! Nevertheless at +75% above PLUS speed limit the monster was out of breath already....

Round 2

I just gave way and let the Supercharged Range Rover [having 3x engine capacity against my.Peugeot.308!] make the first move 'legally' from the RHS. Watch how quick the 'monster' accelerates away. I felt like driving in a 1.4 Bestari try to chase a 1.6 308T.... but watch this, again...

At approx. twice PLUS speed limit the bugger gave up and the monster reflection in the rear view mirror was getting smaller and smaller before disappearing from the scene...

Then the speed was reduced and maintained with AutoCruise at 200kph [approx. 56m/sec] for the rest of the journey... (whenever possible)

Audi TT and Volvo S80

There are times when you are in hurry for appointments. Even though you are sure to arrive on time there are occasions when your timing could be jeopardised due to obstacles by ego drivers as shown below...

I didn't mean to race with them. Otherwise I would have cucuk them as close as possible and kept changing lanes. I hate to drive like that but sometimes I had to. Watch also this video [I regretted for driving that way actually - i.e. overtaking frm LHS and kept changing lanes but what to do, sometimes your patience got limit also kan] .

In the following videos I kept a safe distance from the speeding cars in front of me and stuck to my lane even though I had chance to overtake frm LHS. These are my typical way of driving my.Peugeot.308 on hi-ways fast lanes.

Part 1: ' Chasing' and chased back by an Audi TT

It was around 4:50pm at BBBangi interchange. As I entered PLUS (northbound) there was a glimpse of a speeding Audi TT down the highway. So I thought the traffic ahead was clear and I could arrive on time.

I got only less than 15 minutes to arrive somewhere in Jalan Klang Lama. So I had to drive 'faster than normal'... at first I did not think I could match up with the speed of the Audi.

Finally the Audi driver slowed down and gave way or probably he was afraid of the speed trap or he just wanted to know what car was speeding behind him. Nevertheless, not long after that [from frame 2:02] the Audi driver chased me back but I think he was not brave enough to match up with my speed at that time and the traffic was also getting congested as well. Both of us had to slow down for a while.

Berely a minute later the traffic was clear again but I was...

Part 2: Obstructed by a Volvo S80

Volvos with T5 and T6 engines are phenomena, I'd never tried my luck to cucuk them. Not because of the cars raw power but I know what kinda of men behind their steering wheels. Otherwise they would have bought the car for the wrong purpose. Volvo S60 T5 is my non-German dream family_car actually. Nevertheless Volvo S80 2.0T is not my piece of cake even though its performance is respectable and on par if not better than Peugeot 308 GT.

The Volvo S80 2.0T in front of me in the following video I boleh balun w/o much difficulty if I wished -the car was driven by an ego driver. He didn't give me way even though it looked like that was the quickest acceleration and fastest speed he could brave enough along that stretch of the hiway [from frame 1:17].

Finally I arrived at the destination just on time within less than 15minutes [from BBBangi interchange].

BMW

It was just after 7pm when I was rushing home on PLUS southbound. I had to be home before sunset. Moderate traffic but smooth. As usual when you're driving on fast lane there are always drivers who don't give way, especially when they are driving in cars like BMW, Audi and alike... [A Ferrari also like that]

Been following a BMW and an Audi for a while. I had no choice but to overtake 'em from the left. Suddenly these BMW and Audi started to chase me. Probably they just wanted to test the waters. Hope they're not serious though ...

OK, lets beat up the drum!. [turn ur speaker volume aloud]

Chase me up if you can my friends... or just enjoy free smoking!

p/s I'd just replaced myLion's heart [the HPFP was still under warranty]. The new heart could pump enough blood when needed.

Seconds Before Disaster

Saturday, Sept 10th., 2011.

It was around 0811hrs. As I was speeding [guess what was the speed] suddenly a motobike changes lane right in front of me without giving any signal. Watch what happened...

It was on my way to a service center in KL to diagnose for my 308T intermittent power loss when the car gets hot. Normally after driving for more than 200km. In such a situation the boost pressure seems to drop or totally lost that makes the car behave as if it is powered by a VTi engine.

Soon it was diagnosed for the problematic High-Pressure Fuel Pump. The pump was replaced foc. Legaaa...

Saturday, Sept 17th., 2011.

After replacing the Hi-Pressure Fuel Pump the car was tested for straight line performance. Only one test was needed - i.e the 400 meter standing.

Running time, Leg Length [total: 8+12+14+17+..... =399m] and Speeds were recorded with a data logger as shown below:

Without plotting charts, it can be seen at 9th second the speed was 98km/hr and at the 16th second the car already arrived near the 400m line at 132km/hr. Hence the original performance has been restored. See original performance data HERE (century acceleration) and HERE (400m standing)
